Mechanical Engineering is a vast subject which is a stand-alone discipline supporting almost every other branch of engineering. The aim is to impart knowledge in the core subjects of design, production and fluid power engineering with a solid foundation in mathematical techniques to make the graduate suitable for functions such as design, production, installation, maintenance and research & development. They also receive training in other functional areas like management and operations research.
Mechanical engineering is one of the major activities in engineering profession and its principles are involved in the design, study, development and construction of nearly all of the physical devices and systems. In a way, mechanical engineers are involved in creating the future. They are the driving force behind many of our technologies and industrial processes including innovative products like mobiles, PCs and DVD etc in our modern world. They share interests with Civil Engineers in structures and stress analysis; Electrical engineers in electronics, computing and control theory; Aeronautical Engineers in fluid flow and turbomachinery etc and also design tools needed by other engineers for their work. The Mechanical Engineering program at St. Mary's is designed to develop engineering design & analytical skills, provide extensive practical experience, encourage creativity & resourcefulness, expose the student to new and emerging technologies, promote self-learning, sharpen the students proficiency in communication and install a proper sense of values, a healthy philosophical outlook and a strong set of ethical principles.
The course provides classroom & laboratory instruction on the prerequisites for a career in mechanical engineering, including theory and the basic science for students willing to learn thermal engineering, design, and production engineering. Students learn Designing, Testing, maintenance of Machinery and mechanical equipment. They also receive theoretical and practical knowledge and information–oriented study, including a variety of opportunities for specialization.
The department has been active in teaching & research since its inception. Presently the department has a team of highly qualified, experienced, dedicated, young and dynamic personalities as faculty with an ability to provide quality education. The department is fully established with excellent laboratories and competent staff. Departmental library has 300 volumes and National & International Journals.
